Westminster
Westminster is part of the
city of Westminster lying on the north bank
of the River Thames, southwest of the City
of London. The area is popular for
showcasing some of London's most prestigious
attractions like Buckingham Palace and
Westminster Abbey. Prior to its current
status, Westminster was part of Middlesex
and the name Westminster came from the
ancient description of an abbey called West
Minster, or monastery church. The Palace of
Westminster is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Westminster Abbey was built in the
former Thorney Island and has became the
traditional venue of coronation of kings and
queens of England, while the nearby Palace
of Westminster became the principal royal
residence and later housed the Parliament
and law courts of England. Westminster has
witnessed the economic, political and
cultural evolution of London.
Near the Palace of Westminster and
Westminster Abbey are two popular
educational institutions: the Westminster
School, a prestigious English public school
and three of four campuses of the University
of Westminster.
Population in the area is mostly
residential, mostly are in the working class
community in Peabody Trust estates. The
Westminter Village isn’t referring to a
geographical area but a social circle of
Members of Parliament, political journalists
and others connected to events in the Palace
of Westminster.
